This week we will look at the first miracle that Jesus performed. While attending the Wedding in Cana He turned water into wine. Our reading is found in John 2:1-11. Some of the key points we will study are–

  • What is a miracle?
  • Mary trusts Jesus to fix the problem. (John 2:3)
  • We should do whatever Jesus’ tell us. (John 2:5)
  • Jesus always does the best thing. (John 2:10)

The wedding in Cana – Lesson Guide

Ask the child what a miracle is. Explain that a miracle is something that is not explainable by normal means, but happens through intervention from God. Talk about how Jesus made wine from water. Ask if this was a miracle or not? You may choose to list some things and ask if they would be a miracle.

Get a clear pitcher and fill it with water. Ask the child if they think you can make it into juice. You may have fun with this and ask the child if talking to it or singing to it will make the water become juice. Next, pull out a juice mix, add, and stir. Talk about how you are making juice by using a juice mix. Ask the child if that is a miracle. Point out that it is not. Then ask if Jesus making the water into wine was a miracle. Point out that Jesus didn’t use juice mix or anything else, but He still created wine.

Talk about trust. Explain that trust is when we rely on someone. Talk about times that your child needs to trust you, such as keeping them safe while crossing the street. Point out that Mary trusted Jesus to fix the problem. Remind the child that we, too, have a problem that we need Jesus to fix. Point out that as sinners, we need a Savior and Jesus is the Savior. Remind the child that God loves them and cares for them. Share how we can bring all our worries and cares to Jesus and trust Him.

Play a game by putting a blindfold on your child. Make sure you have an open space without breakables or dangerous objects. Put small items on the ground such as candy or small toys. Tell the child that they will need to trust you to guide them to the objects. Switch places. Point out that even though neither of you could see, you trusted one another.

Talk about how we don’t need to be blind about the right thing, since Jesus has told us what is right. Ask the child where Jesus tells us what is right or wrong. Point out that Jesus will always tell us to do the right thing. You may choose to ask questions with the theme of “Would Jesus say?” The questions should be along the lines of “Would Jesus say hit your sister?” or “Would Jesus say be kind?”

Point out that we can always trust Jesus to do the best thing.  He didn’t just make wine; He made the best wine. Place some items or pictures of items and ask your child to pick out what would be good, better, and the best. For example, some food, toys or activities. Offer three options and ask them to put them in order.

Pray and thank Jesus for coming to save sinners. Ask Him to help you trust Him.

Games and Activities

Taste test

Be sure to check for food allergies before starting this activity. Depending on the age of the child, you may also choose to blindfold them.

Place on the table 3 varieties of similar things. For example, three types of fruit juice, to three types of fruit, three types of chocolate and so on.

Allow the children to taste one of each and then vote on the best one. Remind them how the man tasted the wine and discovered Jesus’ had made the best wine ever.

Plan and throw a mini celebration

Plan to have a mini celebration. Make a list of things that you will need. For example, music, games, balloons, drinks, snacks, cake and so on.

If you time and the resources, you could have a mini celebration with your child.Talk about what it would be like if you had a birthday celebration and ran out of birthday cake. How would that make them feel? How would the people with no cake feel? Explain this is similar to what happened at the wedding.

Water relay – fill the cups

Place a bucket full of water on one side of the room. (Outdoor would work even better). On the other side place some plastic cups. Give the child a jug and have them walk over to the bucket, fill it with water, return to put water in the cups. Repeat until all the cups are full.

If you have more than one child, you could turn it into a competition. Which team can fill all their cups the fastest?
