Lesson Guide – From Garden to Gospel

Create a stall filled with various produce like apples, olives, dates, grapes, figs, wheat, lamb, fish and barley. Use real items, toy fruits, or even crafted representations.

Begin with a play activity, where instead of using currency, children “buy” items by expressing their gratitude linked to the chosen produce. This could be a simple thanks, a biblical verse they remember, or a personal story related to that food. For example, a child could say, “Thank you, God, for the bread that fills our tummies during meals.”

Use the marketplace items to narrate the gospel message.

1. Fruit (optional – Fig): Genesis 3:3

This fruit reminds us of the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve lived. They were told not to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, but they did. This first act of disobedience brought sin into the world. They used fig leaves to cover themselves. This was their attempt to hide their shame and guilt from God. But God already had a plan. A plan to cover our sins not with leaves but with His love.

2. Lamb (A toy lamb or a picture): John 1:29

In the Old Testament, people would offer lambs as a sacrifice to God, asking for forgiveness of their sins. This points to the ultimate Lamb of God, Jesus, who would come to be the final and perfect sacrifice for our sins.

3. Wheat or Bread: John 6:35

Jesus once said, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.’ Just like we need bread to live, our spirits need Jesus. He is the one who nourishes our souls and promises us eternal life if we believe in Him.

4. Vine & Grapes: John 15:5

Jesus also said, ‘I am the vine; you are the branches.’ Just as branches get their life from the vine, we get our spiritual life and strength from Jesus. Without Him, we can’t bear good fruit in our lives.

5. Fish (Toy or image): Matthew 4:19

Fish were a huge part of daily life in Jesus’ time. He used fish to teach about the Kingdom of God and even performed miracles with them. When Jesus called His first disciples, He said, ‘Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ (Matthew 4:19). Just as fishers catch fish, Jesus wants us to share His love and message with everyone.

6. Mustard Seed (Show a tiny seed): Matthew 13:31-32

This tiny seed is like our faith. Even if it starts this small, it can grow into something big. Jesus came to plant seeds of faith in our hearts so that the Kingdom of God could grow within and around us.

7. Olive (Showing an olive or olive oil): 1 John 2:27

In biblical times, olive oil was used not just for cooking but for special anointing, symbolizing God’s empowerment and presence. Just as kings and priests were anointed with olive oil, showing God chose them for a purpose, Jesus promised we would be anointed with something even more precious: the Holy Spirit. This Holy Spirit is given to us to guide, comfort, and empower us to live for God.

Finish with a prayer of thanksgiving, acknowledging God’s provision both physically and spiritually. Encourage the child to pick up an item from the stall and thank God for one specific lesson or truth they learned today.
