BACKGROUND TO THE PASSAGE

Abram and Sarai were a married couple from the city of Ur (see Genesis 11 to learn more about their family background).

God later changed Abram and Sarai’s names to Abraham and Sarah. This name change was an important part of their calling, as it reflected their commitment to God’s plan for them and their descendants. Abraham means “father of a multitude,” while Sarah means “princess”.

Abraham and Sarah are not only two of the most important figures in the Bible but also in History. They are considered the direct line ancestors of all three of the world’s major religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
