Acts 16:16–40
Trueway Word Bible lesson for preteens (ages 8–13)
About This Preteen Bible Lesson
This free printable Bible lesson helps preteens explore Acts 16:16–40, where Paul and Silas are beaten and imprisoned after doing what was right. Locked deep inside the prison with their feet in stocks, they choose to pray and sing hymns to God. An earthquake suddenly shakes the prison, the doors open, and the chains come loose—but Paul and Silas do not run away. Their response leads the frightened jailer to ask one of the most important questions in the Bible: “What must I do to be saved?”
Using the Trueway Word W.O.R.D. Bible study method, preteens will Walk into God’s Word, Observe what the Bible says, Reflect on what it means, and Discover how to live it out. Designed for Sunday school, homeschool, family devotions, and church groups, this preteen Bible lesson helps children develop a biblical worldview centred on costly obedience, praising God in difficult circumstances, showing Jesus through our responses, trusting that God is always at work, and understanding that salvation comes through faith in Jesus.
The Big Question
What must I do to be saved?
When the jailer asked this question, Paul and Silas answered clearly: “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). Salvation is not something we earn by trying harder, being nicer, praying enough, or making ourselves good enough for God.
This lesson helps preteens understand that sin separates us from God and that we cannot rescue ourselves. Jesus lived the perfect life we could not live, died for sinners, and rose again. Faith means trusting Jesus Himself—depending on who He is and what He has done rather than trusting our own efforts.
What Kids Will Learn
- Doing the right thing can sometimes be costly.
- Paul and Silas suffered even though they had obeyed God.
- Following Jesus may cost comfort, approval, fairness, or safety.
- Jesus remains worthy and near when obedience is difficult.
- Paul and Silas prayed and praised God while they were still in prison.
- Praise does not mean pretending difficult circumstances are good.
- We can remember God’s goodness even when life feels unfair or confusing.
- Other people notice how Christians respond in difficult situations.
- Paul and Silas showed mercy by staying when the prison doors opened.
- God was doing more than simply opening prison doors—He was opening the jailer’s heart.
- Salvation cannot be earned by good behaviour or religious effort.
- We are saved by trusting in the Lord Jesus.
- God can work through difficult circumstances in ways we do not expect.
Why This Lesson Matters
Preteens are becoming increasingly aware that doing the right thing does not always lead to an easy outcome. They may experience rejection, unfairness, embarrassment, misunderstanding, or pressure from others. Acts 16 gives children a realistic biblical framework for those moments. Paul and Silas obeyed Jesus and still suffered, yet their suffering did not mean that God had abandoned them.
This lesson also helps children see that faith becomes visible in the way we respond when circumstances are hard. Paul and Silas prayed, praised, stayed when they could have escaped, and showed mercy to a frightened jailer. Through their actions, another person saw something different about Jesus. Most importantly, the passage gives preteens a clear foundation for understanding salvation: we do not rescue ourselves. Jesus saves, and faith receives what He has done.
