Lesson Overview

Welcome to Session 7 of Missions: Big World, Bigger God—where children continue discovering how God’s love moves through ordinary people who notice, care, and act.

In this session, children explore Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan and then step into the life of Amy Carmichael—a missionary who showed compassion by protecting and caring for vulnerable children in India.

This lesson helps children understand that love is not only something we say or feel.

  • Love notices.
  • Love protects.
  • Love moves toward people who need help.

Through the Good Samaritan and Amy Carmichael, children will see that biblical compassion is active, brave, and practical. It means seeing people others may ignore and choosing to respond with kindness, courage, and care.

What Children Will Learn

Children will learn that:

Jesus calls us to love our neighbour with action
Compassion begins when we notice people who are hurting
Real love protects and cares for those who are weak or vulnerable
God can use the way He made us for His special purposes
Helping others may take courage, sacrifice, and faithfulness
Small acts of kindness can show God’s big love

📖 Bible Focus: The Good Samaritan

This session begins with Jesus’ parable from Luke 10:25–37.

A man is hurt and left on the road. Some people see him but keep walking. Then a Samaritan stops, moves toward him, cares for his wounds, carries him to safety, and pays for his continued care.

Children discover that:

  • the Samaritan noticed someone in need
  • he did not just feel sorry—he acted
  • he used what he had to protect and care
  • Jesus says, “Go and do likewise”

The Good Samaritan shows us that compassion is more than a feeling. It is love in action.

🌏 Mission Story: Amy Carmichael

Children are then introduced to Amy Carmichael, a missionary from Ireland who served in India.

As a child, Amy wished she had blue eyes instead of brown eyes. Later, she discovered that God had made her exactly as she was for a purpose.

Amy noticed people others ignored. She cared for poor women and girls, and later in India, she protected children who were in danger. One of those children was a little girl named Preena, who needed safety, love, and care.

Children will learn how Amy:

  • trusted God even when life was difficult
  • noticed those who were vulnerable
  • protected children who could not protect themselves
  • created a safe home in Dohnavur
  • became known as “Amma,” meaning Mother
  • continued serving through prayer, letters, and love even when she was weak

Amy’s life helps children see that compassion means giving, protecting, and continuing to care.

Her famous saying becomes a key thought for this lesson:

“You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”
